ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 2003--Cox Communications today announced the addition of Network Associates' McAfee SpamKiller to the suite of online security products currently offered to Cox High Speed Internet customers. Cox already offers McAfee VirusScan(R), McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, McAfee Privacy Service and McAfee Web Essentials (a bundle of both the anti-virus and personal firewall products). The addition of McAfee SpamKiller provides a layered security defense for Cox customers.

"McAfee SpamKiller is an excellent addition to Cox's portfolio of products available to enhance Cox High Speed Internet service," said Steve Gorman, Cox's executive director of marketing for residential Internet services. "We understand that spam is a nuisance many customers would like to avoid. McAfee SpamKiller is just one tool in our growing arsenal to combat email spam."

Key features of McAfee SpamKiller include:

  • Protection against fraudulent emails and scams, including virus hoaxes and email pitches that can lead to identity theft.
  • A new, powerful, multi-layered filtering engine with "self-learning" technology that has the ability to train itself by continuously examining and analyzing what it blocks and what is indisputably identified as legitimate email.
  • Optional password protection that protects children from unsuitable content.
  • A "friends list" that automatically recognizes legitimate addresses.
  • Automatic email spam filter updates that continually provide the most current spam prevention technology available.
  • Direct toolbar integration with Outlook and Outlook Express for added convenience and usability.

"We are confident that Cox High Speed Internet customers will enjoy the time-savings and convenience of using our comprehensive and easy-to-use spam application to block unwanted email," said Lisa Henderson, vice president of marketing, McAfee Security Consumer division at Network Associates. "In addition to the time-savings benefit, users will also see the value in McAfee SpamKiller's ability to specifically target email spam messages containing offensive content and identity theft scams. This is important for households who want to shield their families from these types of threats."

Cox is also in the process of developing network-based solutions to control the volume of spam that crosses its network and impacts its customers. "We're studying anti-spam solutions that will integrate with our email platform, using a variety of tactics including rules-based methodologies as well as blacklists to block incoming spam from known spammers," said Gorman.

Recently, Cox High Speed Internet received an "A+" grade by PC Magazine readers. This is the highest grade given to a broadband Internet service provider. "The addition of Network Associates' McAfee SpamKiller to our portfolio of optional customer services and the continuous improvement of our network simply strengthens Cox High Speed Internet's position as the best value in the marketplace today," said Gorman.
